Officer involved shooting in Pell City
The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office was requested through a mutual aid partnership to conduct an investigation into an officer involved shooting involving officers from the Pell City Police Department. The St. Clair County Sheriff's Office responded to the area of 23rd Street North Pell City on Wednesday, March 19th at approximately 6:00 pm and discovered that Pell City Police answered a series of 911 calls of a man armed with a hatchet acting aggressive towards people.
Pell City Police Officers immediately encountered a white male subject armed with a hatchet. Officers gave numerous commands to the subject to put the hatchet down and to stop acting aggressively. The suspect refused to comply with the officer's commands. The suspect charged at officers while armed with a hatchet forcing an officer to discharge his firearm. Officers and arriving medical personnel immediately rendered aid to the subject. The subject was transported to UAB St. Vincent's St. Clair emergency room where he was pronounced dead.
The subject has been transported to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences for an autopsy. Jacksonville State University Center for Applied Forensics assisted in the scene processing and evidence collected.
