Aviation-Drone
The primary mission of the St. Clair County Sheriff's Office Aviation Support Unit is to enhance the safety of officers, citizens, and visitors by providing effective aerial support to St. Clair County and to enhance the effectiveness of federal, state, and other local law enforcement units by providing airborne surveillance, observation, and reporting of criminal activity; especially in times of emergency, counter-drug operations, and national defense. The unit is comprised of highly skilled deputies, law enforcement officers from neighboring agencies, and volunteers who operate two OH-58 Kiowa helicopters that were obtained from the military surplus program.
The Sheriff's Office Drone Team was established in 2023 at the direction of Sheriff Murray. The team was assembled to enhance the department's mission of protecting lives and property when other means and resources are unavailable. The drones support deputies in emergencies such as SWAT callouts, high-risk warrant services, suspect apprehension, and missing person location. The team is comprised of a group of well-trained deputies who have completed the required FAA guidelines and regulations for operating the drones. The team has several drones with varying capabilities available to perform the various missions that may need to be performed at any given time.
